Number 15 – Provide Resources for Mentoring and Coaching

Audie Penn, July 19, 2026July 12, 2026

Actively Support, Promote, Communicate, and Provide Resources for Mentoring and Coaching Throughout the Organization

Practitioners: tactical, integrative, and strategic

Organizations often invest heavily in training. Courses are developed, certifications are earned, and information is documented. These activities have value. They help people acquire knowledge and understand methods. Yet knowledge alone does not create capability.

Capability develops when people have opportunities to observe, practice, reflect, and improve. It develops when experience is shared, judgment is discussed, and thinking becomes visible. This is where mentoring and coaching play an important role.

Many people view mentoring and coaching as optional activities—valuable when time permits but secondary to the work that must be done. The reality is often the opposite. Mentoring and coaching are part of the work because they influence the future capability of the organization.

A mentor does more than provide answers. A coach does more than ask questions. At their best, both create conditions for learning. They help others see what they might otherwise overlook. They demonstrate how to approach uncertainty, solve problems, make decisions, and continue developing long after the conversation has ended.

This becomes increasingly important as organizations face more complex challenges. No organization can rely indefinitely on a small group of experts, leaders, or high performers. Capability that remains concentrated in a few individuals eventually becomes a constraint. Capability that is intentionally developed throughout the organization becomes a source of resilience and strength.

Provide Resources for Mentoring and Coaching

The effects of mentoring and coaching are rarely confined to a single relationship. One person develops greater confidence. Another gains clearer judgment. A future leader learns how to think through a difficult decision. Over time, these individuals influence others. What begins as a conversation can extend far beyond the original interaction.

The impact is similar to a ripple moving across water. The point where the ripple begins is often easy to identify. The full extent of its influence is not. The same is true of development. A thoughtful discussion, a shared experience, or a moment of genuine coaching may continue shaping decisions, behaviors, and relationships years after it occurs.

Organizations committed to Operational Excellence recognize that sustainable improvement requires more than tools and methods. It requires people who can learn, adapt, teach, and develop others. Coaching and mentoring help make this possible. They transform individual experience into organizational capability.

The greatest contribution a leader, practitioner, or employee may make is not simply solving today’s problem. It may be helping someone else develop the capability to solve tomorrow’s.

Questions For Your Consideration

How actively does your organization support the development of coaching and mentoring relationships?

What capabilities are currently concentrated in a few individuals rather than broadly developed?

Who has had the greatest influence on your own development, and what did they demonstrate that shaped your thinking?

What ripple might be created if you invested more intentionally in developing others?
